| In 1991 Mr. Olatunji as a founding member of the drum and percussion ensemble PLANET DRUM produced a CD recording of the same name with world renowned musicians from India, South America, the Caribbean and the U.S. PLANET DRUM has been a best selling recording on commercial charts and the ensemble carried out a fifteen city tour of the U.S. which played to sold-out audiences at such theaters as Carnegie Hall. The contribution of this project led to a Grammy Award for the Planet Drum recording.
Recently Mr. Olatunji has led his Drums of Passion performance group of drummers, singers and dancers in appearances as diverse as the Earth Celebration '95, Sado Island, Japan; One World, One Music Celebration of the 50th Year of the United Nations at Madison Square Garden, New York; opening ceremonies of the International Peace University, Berlin; International Transpersonal Association Conference in Prague, Czechoslovakia; The First International Men's Conference, Austin; the opening of the New Years Eve Celebration Concert by the highly popular band the Grateful Dead in Oakland and the Juneteenth Celebration, Buffalo. The Olatunji company has performed in the USA and Europe for three and a half decades, they are recognized as pioneers of African performance in North and South America.
This year as in the past 12 years Mr. Olatunji will once again be a member of the faculties at both Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California and Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, In his workshops at these educational institutions Mr. Olatunji continues to pursue his four decade commitment to spreading knowledge of African culture through the teaching of traditional drumming, dancing and chanting in classes for adults and young people. This commitment continues the educational activities that Mr. Olatunji began in the early 1960's when he founded the Olatunji Center for African Culture in Harlem. Most of the people in the U.S. now teaching African performing arts have once passed through the Olatunji Center. In addition to workshops at Esalen and Omega other recent workshops have been conducted at Universita Degli Studi Di Napoli, Naples, Italy; Kodo Drum of Japan; Ontario Anti-Racist Secretariat, Toronto; Tantra Galerie, Interlocken, Switzerland; The International Center for African Performing Arts at the University of Ghana; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. Mr. Olatunji's other activities recently have included acting as consultant for several books being published on topics such as traditional African Drumming and the African roots of pop music. His entire set of recordings done for Columbia Records between 1959 and 1965 were recently re-released as a four CD boxed set through Sony Records. He is currently working on production of recordings to be released here and in Europe. Olatunji and The Drums of Passion continue their vision of the shared experience of joy, energy, and exhilaration stimulated by sounds and rhythms of universal language from the deep tradition of African drumming, dancing and chanting. |
